TONGUE TIES, PROVERBS AND CONUNDRUMS

With writer Anna Chatzimanoli

Because learning a language is not a simple procedure
Because Greek language is multifunctional as well as creative
Because reading and writing is like a game
Because learning requires zest . . .

Writer Anna Chatzimanoli will take both kindergarten pupils and teachers on a magical journey to the world of folk tradition, she will help us “tie and crack” the Greek language, play, laugh, discover and create. Peculiar words, words with cues and symbols, words that clash, fool us and confuse us. Are you wondering what is behind all these? Let us unfold the mystery!

IN THE MUSEUM

Mandoulides Schools inaugurate the educational “In The Museum” program during the 2009 - 2010 school year. The program is intended for Elementary School pupils and aims to change their attitude and behavior towards museums.

During the program pupils will be working on one museum each year. They will visit the museum, study the historical period to which it pertains, participate in educational programs that each museum offers, take on team and individual projects, discuss with experts.

More specifically, 1st grade pupils will visit the Folklore Museum of Thessaloniki, 2nd graders will go to the Byzantine Museum and the White Tower, 3rd graders will be working on the Archaeological Museum, 4th graders will be visiting the Teloglion Foundation of Art (or the Petralona Museum), 5th graders will be at the Museum of Royal Tombs of Vergina while 6th graders will visit the Dion archaeological site.

Museum education begins at Kindergarten. Kindergarten pupils visit museums of the city according to thematic units, e.g. the Archaeological Museum as part of the “Grape-Wine” unit. They also attend educational programs.

WE TALK ABOUT US

Pupils of 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grades had the opportunity to discuss with experts issues regarding their interests, concerns, aims and goals. The "We Talk About Us" program, inaugurated in the 2009 - 2010 school year, aims to develop dialogue, respond to pupils’ questions and inform them on current affairs. Experts of all kinds, scientists and artists discussed with pupils, they commented and contemplated.

Pupils had the opportunity to talk with counseling psychologist Maria Chatzipantazi about the topic "Some kids bully me at school". Following, there was a discussion with Olympic medalist Voula Patoulidou on the topic: "Sports: pros and cons". Advantages and disadvantages of sports was the focus of discussion: volunteering, emulation, healthy role models but also doping and violence in sports venues. After that, a discussion with athletes writers Anna Verouli and Nikos Michalopoulos took place.
